Some chairs are just somewhere to sit. This one is where the story begins. Our Woodland Storytelling Throne is a full-height, hand-carved oak chair built to turn a corner of the classroom, library or forest school into a gathering place children can't wait to crowd around.
Every inch tells a tale. A fox watches from one upright while a barn owl roosts on the other, and down at the base a hedgehog and a badger nestle among ferns, oak leaves and toadstools. Trailing oak and acorn vines climb the back panel around a carved heart, and a rounded plaque carries personalised words of your choosing — here, “Forever a part of our story.” It's the kind of detail that gives a school something truly its own.
We hand-carve each throne in our workshop on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) from solid, sustainably sourced oak, finished smooth to live happily indoors or out. Built sturdy enough for daily use by little storytellers and big imaginations alike, it's made to be sat in, read from and remembered for years.
Whether it's for a reading corner, an outdoor classroom or a special school anniversary, we'd love to carve one for you. Get in touch to talk through animals, wording and timings — every throne is bespoke.
Finish
This piece is supplied unvarnished as standard. Left natural, solid oak slowly weathers to a soft, silvery-grey — completely normal for outdoor timber, a graceful way for a piece to age, and with no maintenance needed. If you’d prefer to bring out the grain and warm, honeyed tones, choose the varnished option (+£50) and we’ll hand-apply three coats of Epifanes, a premium marine yacht varnish.
More about the two finishes
Outdoor furniture takes a real beating from sun and weather. Left natural, an unvarnished piece simply silvers over time and asks nothing of you. A varnished piece keeps its rich sheen for a couple of years; after that the varnish may begin to flake or patch, at which point you can simply re-coat it, or let it weather back to that natural silvery-grey. Either way, your oak is fine.
