A memorial bench is one of the most personal things we make. Every one starts with a conversation — about who you're remembering, what they loved, and what you'd like the bench to say without words. What follows is weeks of slow hand-carving in oak, until the bench becomes a quiet way of keeping someone close.
We've been making garden memorial benches in our Mid Wales workshop for years. They sit in school playgrounds, churchyards, public parks, family gardens, allotments and wildlife reserves across the UK — each one carved by hand from solid oak, finished with three coats of Epifanes matt varnish so it weathers gracefully but stays sound for decades.
Carved with the things that mattered to them
What sets a Free Range Designs memorial bench apart is the detail. We carve the things that meant something to the person you're remembering — a favourite animal, a place, a sport, a song, a phrase. Not as a plaque screwed onto a generic bench, but worked into the wood itself: into the backrest, the legs, the arms.
The Forever Loved Rainbow Memorial Bench above was made as a tribute to a baby. The inscription "we will look for you in rainbows" runs across the bench, with a rainbow, a woodland rabbit and an owl hand-carved into the back. Infant memorial benches like this one are some of the quietest, most considered pieces we make.
Made for a person, not a product line
Every memorial bench we build is bespoke. There is no catalogue you flick through. You tell us about the person — their name, their dates, what they loved, the stories that come up first when their family talk about them — and we work out a design with you over emails and sketches. If you're not sure where to start, we'll send you photos of benches we've made before and you point at the bits that feel right.
The Together We've Grown Memorial Bench was carved for a school garden. The dedication is worked into the back panel, with woodland scenes growing alongside it — the kind of bench that becomes part of how the school remembers, year after year. School memorial benches are a real part of what we do, and we work closely with PTAs, Friends groups and headteachers to get the brief right.
Solid oak, hand-built joinery, made to outlast all of us
All our memorial benches are made from locally sourced oak. The joinery is hand-cut mortise and tenon — the same construction method that's kept oak benches sound in churchyards for centuries. Three coats of Epifanes matt varnish on top means the bench will weather to a beautiful silvery grey over the years but stay structurally sound for generations.
That matters, because the people commissioning these benches are usually thinking long-term. Children. Grandchildren. A bench that's still there in fifty years' time, with the same name still carved clearly into the back.
The Rainbow Memorial Garden Bench above shows what becomes possible when a family fills the brief with detail — a rainbow centrepiece, a pair of clasped hands, butterfly finials, a hare and a highland cow carved into the front legs. Every element on this bench was something specific to the person being remembered.
How to commission a memorial bench
The process is simple. Email us at [email protected] or call Paul on 077 59439658, and tell us about the person you're remembering. We'll talk through what's possible, share photos of past benches, and put a sketch together for you to react to. We quote a price once the design is settled.
Lead times are typically four to five weeks, but we'll move things around for anniversaries, funerals and unveilings — tell us the date that matters and we'll do everything we can to hit it.
You can browse every memorial bench we've ever made in our Memorial Bench collection — owls, kingfishers, motorbikes, dogs, deer, tigers, hearts, rugby roses, woodland scenes — to get a feel for what's possible. None of them are off-the-shelf. They're all someone's story.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a memorial bench cost?
Most of our memorial benches sit between £1,770 and £2,100, depending on length (two-seater or three-seater) and the complexity of the carving. We'll give you a clear quote once the design is settled.
How long does it take to make one?
Typical lead time is four to five weeks once the design is agreed. If you have a specific date — an anniversary, an unveiling, a funeral — tell us and we'll do everything we can to meet it.
Can I have specific text, names or a poem carved into it?
Yes. Names, dates, a quote, a poem, runes, song lyrics, a phrase that means something to the family — we'll work the words into the design as part of the carving rather than adding them on as a plaque.
Will the bench survive outdoors year-round?
Yes. Solid oak with hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, finished with three coats of Epifanes matt varnish. It will weather to a silvery grey over time but stays structurally sound for decades.
Can schools, PTAs or Friends groups commission one?
Absolutely — schools are a big part of what we do. Prices on our website include VAT, so the ex-VAT figure schools work with is lower. We can invoice and accept purchase orders, and we're happy to register as a supplier on council or trust systems if needed.
Whatever the story is, we'd be glad to help carve it. Email us to start a conversation, or browse the full Memorial Bench collection to see what's possible.
