The Giant Wooden Welsh Throne is a hand-carved solid oak throne inspired by the Mabinogi and the legend of Brân the Blessed — and is one of five storytelling chairs made for Meirion's Trail, a permanent public storytelling trail in Harlech, one of Wales' most storied towns.
The trail was commissioned by Visit Harlech to bring the story of Meirion to life across the town. Each of the five chairs corresponds to a chapter of 'Stori Meirion' by celebrated Welsh author Mair Tomos Ifans — a tale of a leader, a golden torc, giant seahorses, Jackdaws, and the magical Adar Rhiannon. The throne shown here sits with a view of Harlech Castle, evoking the story's roots in the Mabinogi and the words of Bendigeidfran: A fo ben bid bont — He who would be a leader, let them be a bridge. The trail is now a permanent feature of the town and has been featured by Visit Harlech as a walking attraction for visitors and families.
Built from 100% solid oak in our Mid Wales workshop, the throne is covered in intricate Celtic knotwork carved by hand into every surface. The solid hand-built joinery makes this a piece that belongs equally in a castle courtyard, a school library, or a private garden.

Your Version
A throne of this scale is a statement. Tell us the story you want it to tell — your school's crest, your county's mythology, your organisation's founding tale. We can carve almost anything into solid oak, and we share design sketches before any cutting begins.
Commissions at this scale start from £4,070 inc. VAT. Lead times vary by complexity and are discussed at commission stage. Prices include VAT. Public bodies, schools, and councils can order by purchase order and pay on invoice.

Finish
This piece is supplied unvarnished as standard. Left natural, solid oak slowly weathers to a soft, silvery-grey — completely normal for outdoor timber, a graceful way for a piece to age, and with no maintenance needed. If you’d prefer to bring out the grain and warm, honeyed tones, choose the varnished option (+£50) and we’ll hand-apply three coats of Epifanes, a premium marine yacht varnish.
More about the two finishes
Outdoor furniture takes a real beating from sun and weather. Left natural, an unvarnished piece simply silvers over time and asks nothing of you. A varnished piece keeps its rich sheen for a couple of years; after that the varnish may begin to flake or patch, at which point you can simply re-coat it, or let it weather back to that natural silvery-grey. Either way, your oak is fine.
