Our Oak Timber Frame Compost Toilet is a bespoke composting toilet building of the highest order — originally commissioned by the National Trust for Cliveden Estate and inspired by the medieval sentry boxes that define the architecture of great English country estates. Built from heavy solid green oak with hand-cut joinery, a cedar shingle roof, and a traditional stable door, this is a composting toilet that belongs in a heritage landscape — and is built to last as long as the buildings it sits alongside.
Commissioned by the National Trust
The design brief from the National Trust was clear: a composting toilet building that looked as though it had always been part of Cliveden's grounds, with the quality of construction to match the estate's existing historic structures. The result is a building that draws on centuries of English timber-framing tradition — solid oak posts and beams, mortice-and-tenon joinery, decorative arched bracing, and a roof finial — while housing a modern, reliable waterless composting toilet system inside. It is a genuinely rare thing: a toilet building that enhances its setting.
For Country Estates, Heritage Properties, and Premium Sites
If you manage or own a country estate, a historic garden, a prestigious glamping site, or a heritage property, the standard range of composting toilet buildings simply will not do. This oak-framed structure is designed for exactly those settings — somewhere the toilet building is visible and prominent, where architectural quality matters, and where a cheap-looking structure would jar with the surroundings. The oak weathers naturally to silver-grey over time, requiring no maintenance and improving in character with every passing year.
Bespoke Design, Made to Order
This building is available as a fully bespoke commission. We can adjust the dimensions, the internal layout, the cladding, the roofing material, and the level of decorative detailing to suit your specific site and requirements. Whether you need a single-cubicle toilet for a walled garden, a larger building for a public path through a heritage estate, or a twin-cubicle version for higher footfall, we can design and build it. Our team has over 25 years of experience building composting toilet structures in Wales, and this is the piece we are most proud of.
The Composting System
Inside, the mechanism is the same proven wheelie-bin composting system used across our range — a urine-separating seat, a 240-litre collection bin beneath, and a simple rotation system for composting the waste over 12 months before it can be used as a soil amendment. Waterless, odour-free, chemical-free, and completely independent of mains drainage. A toilet worthy of any estate, with zero environmental impact.
