I love being on the beach, which is why I enjoy working with driftwood so much. I can spend days walking along the west Wales coastline close to where I live, collecting driftwood, and legitimately call it work. I even get my wife and friends to help out sometimes. It’s exciting when we find a good spot, where lots of wood has been thrown high above the tide line up on to the rocks, where it’s been bleached white by the sun. It takes a lot of driftwood to make each heart and it’s important to pick the wriggly, gnarly pieces with the most character. They’re the best pieces to make a driftwood heart with. The weather in Wales can often be cold and wet, but even in the wind and rain I’m still happy to be able to call the beach my office.
