The Celtic Knotwork Viking Throne is a hand-carved solid Welsh oak throne covered in intricate Norse knotwork and runic engravings — a chair that carries the weight and presence of something forged from myth, and makes any room feel like a saga is about to begin.
The knotwork runs the full height of the backrest, interweaving across every surface in the continuous, unbroken pattern that Celtic and Norse craftspeople used to represent eternity and connection. The runes are carved into the frame — not applied or printed, but cut deep into the oak by hand. It is the kind of chair that people stop in front of before they sit in it.
Each chair is slightly different — the knotwork is hand-drawn and hand-carved, so no two are identical.

Your Version
We can carve specific runes into the frame — a name, a date, a phrase, or a meaningful word in Norse script. The knotwork can be adapted to incorporate animals from Norse mythology: ravens, wolves, serpents, bears. We can also add a school crest or badge for libraries and schools that want to make the Viking connection part of their identity. Tell us what you would like carved and we will sketch it before we begin.
Typical lead time is 4–5 weeks. Prices include VAT. Schools can order by purchase order and pay on invoice. If your school or trust needs to register us as a supplier first, we will provide all details required.

Finish
This piece is supplied unvarnished as standard. Left natural, solid oak slowly weathers to a soft, silvery-grey — completely normal for outdoor timber, a graceful way for a piece to age, and with no maintenance needed. If you’d prefer to bring out the grain and warm, honeyed tones, choose the varnished option (+£50) and we’ll hand-apply three coats of Epifanes, a premium marine yacht varnish.
More about the two finishes
Outdoor furniture takes a real beating from sun and weather. Left natural, an unvarnished piece simply silvers over time and asks nothing of you. A varnished piece keeps its rich sheen for a couple of years; after that the varnish may begin to flake or patch, at which point you can simply re-coat it, or let it weather back to that natural silvery-grey. Either way, your oak is fine.
