The Giant Wooden Storytelling Chair is an awe-inspiring outdoor throne hand-built from driftwood recovered from the West Wales coastline and reclaimed timber — a seat of stories that feels as though it grew from the landscape itself.
Standing 185 cm tall with sweeping carved armrests, this is not a chair you simply sit in — it's a place you inhabit. Each one is entirely unique, shaped by the natural grain and form of its reclaimed timber, with carved details that emerge from the wood rather than being imposed on it. One pair of chairs shown here carries inscriptions carved into the seat: "You are always on my mind" and "Knocking on heaven's door" — chosen by their commissioners, words that become part of the chair forever.
One of ours has been photographed on the summit of Cadair Idris — if it can handle that, it can handle anything.

Your Version
Every Giant Storytelling Chair is commissioned individually. You choose the carved details — whether that's animals, creatures from local mythology, a school crest, or a personal inscription carved into the seat. We'll talk through your ideas and Paul will build something that carries your story in the grain of the wood.
Typical lead time is 4–5 weeks, though we're flexible if you have a deadline. Prices include VAT. Schools can order by purchase order — we'll supply our VAT number, bank details and address for supplier registration. Contact us to discuss your commission.

Finish
This piece is supplied unvarnished as standard. Left natural, solid oak slowly weathers to a soft, silvery-grey — completely normal for outdoor timber, a graceful way for a piece to age, and with no maintenance needed. If you’d prefer to bring out the grain and warm, honeyed tones, choose the varnished option (+£50) and we’ll hand-apply three coats of Epifanes, a premium marine yacht varnish.
More about the two finishes
Outdoor furniture takes a real beating from sun and weather. Left natural, an unvarnished piece simply silvers over time and asks nothing of you. A varnished piece keeps its rich sheen for a couple of years; after that the varnish may begin to flake or patch, at which point you can simply re-coat it, or let it weather back to that natural silvery-grey. Either way, your oak is fine.
