Collection of sustainably sourced wood, showing natural shapes and textures, used by Free Range Designs for handcrafted furniture

Materials

People often ask us where we source our wood from, and there are many answers.

Each piece of furniture begins with the careful selection of the natural materials, sourced with respect from our local countryside in the Dyfi Valley. We believe that every creation should carry the unique beauty of its origin, telling its own story through the character of the wood.

Our heartwood oak pieces are hand-selected from local, sustainably managed woodlands, where we only take a very few, specific branches that have either fallen to the ground or are standing dead.

We search for individual pieces that hold natural beauty and strength, choosing timber with unique grain patterns, knots, and textures that bring depth and authenticity to each design.

In addition to forest-sourced timber, we incorporate driftwood gathered from our local rivers, estuaries, and coastline. These pieces, weathered by water and time, carry their own history, shaped by the elements and polished over time. Driftwood’s organic form and texture lend a distinctive character to our designs, making each creation truly one-of-a-kind.

By sourcing materials locally and sustainably, we create furniture that’s not only beautiful but also a testament to the natural world around us and our respect for it.
