Everest Bench — Carved Mountain Scene, Layered Oak

A garden bench with a favourite view carved across the back of it. This one was made for a customer who has trekked in Nepal more than once, and wanted the Everest range — the profile of Everest and Lhotse with the foothills in front — at the end of her garden, with herself and her collie standing in the scene.

The backrest is built up in layers of oak rather than carved from one flat board, so each ridge really does stand in front of the one behind it and the mountains read in depth from across a lawn. The tones are all wood stains, no paint: darker foothills in the foreground, pale oak for the snow. The figure and the dog are carved from photographs and sit in the foreground at the left, leaving the mountains room to breathe. The seat is random-cut oak boards for a more natural look, on thick posts shaped from whole timber.

Any view can go on the back — a Lakeland fell, a Welsh ridge, a Scottish loch, the mountain you got engaged on — and any figure, dog or bird can stand in it. Prices include VAT and UK delivery.

Your Version

Send us a photograph of the view you'd like, and of anyone (or any dog) you'd like standing in it. We'll draw up a design and go back and forth with you until it's right — the bench pictured went through several sketches before the first cut was made, which is exactly how it should work. Finish

This piece is supplied unvarnished as standard. Left natural, solid oak slowly weathers to a soft, silvery-grey — completely normal for outdoor timber, a graceful way for a piece to age, and with no maintenance needed. If you’d prefer to bring out the grain and warm, honeyed tones, choose the varnished option (+£50) and we’ll hand-apply three coats of Epifanes, a premium marine yacht varnish.
