This is the kind of piece you make once in a career — and even then, you're not sure how you pulled it off.
A bespoke king-size bed frame in solid oak, commissioned with an extraordinary brief: a witch, a Buddha, a snake, mushrooms, butterflies, beetles, a lotus flower — and on the footboard, a completely different world of flowing Celtic knotwork, carved in relief from solid oak planks, with painted butterflies lifting from purple flowers, a spiralling ammonite, musical notes winding through the grain, and clusters of mushrooms at the edges.
The headboard tells its story from left to right. A young witch with flowing hair sits among red-spotted fly agaric mushrooms, holding her broomstick, surrounded by purple flowers. In the centre, a patterned snake winds through the scene, passing a pair of gleaming emerald beetles. To the right, a serene Buddha meditates on a cream lotus as butterflies drift overhead. Every figure was carved and painted entirely by hand.
The footboard takes a completely different direction — deep braided Celtic knotwork carved into the flowing oak boards, creating waves of movement and depth, with painted details rising from the wood like something growing rather than made.
The corner posts are solid rustic oak: tall, bark-textured, and grounding. The whole piece has the feeling of something that came from a forest and found its way into a bedroom.
