The Conwy Castle Throne is a hand-carved solid oak throne made by commission for Conwy Castle in North Wales — one of the finest medieval fortifications in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and positioned beside the castle as part of the visitor experience.
The brief was to create something that felt as though it belonged to the place: a chair that carried the weight of the castle’s history, carved with the detail and intention that medieval craftspeople put into the stonework above it. The backrest is filled with Celtic knotwork and the figures of ancient guardians and historical characters from Welsh and Norman history, hand-carved from solid oak with the patience a commission like this demands. Visitors who encounter it at the castle stop in front of it. Children sit in it and immediately become someone from a different century.
Carved in our Mid Wales workshop and finished with three coats of Epifanes matt varnish for outdoor durability. The solid hand-built joinery is built for a setting that has already stood for seven centuries — this chair is made to last alongside it.
