Some teachers leave the kind of mark that the people they taught carry for the rest of their lives. This bench was made for exactly that kind of person. Mrs. Best loved walking in the mountains, loved her two dogs, loved a glass of wine at the end of a good day in the hills — and she loved her students. The backrest carving holds all of it: hiking boots, a wine glass, two faithful companions, a wide mountain landscape, and a Roald Dahl quote that says everything that needed saying.
The bench now stands somewhere she is remembered and returned to. That’s what a bench like this is for — not just a place to sit, but a place to go back to, season after season, and feel the presence of someone who mattered. Every element was chosen by the people who loved her, and every element was carved by hand in our workshop in Mid Wales.
If you’re honouring a teacher, a mentor, a colleague, or someone whose passions made them who they were, this is the kind of bench we love to make. Bring us the details — the walks they loved, the things they collected, the words that were theirs — and we’ll carve something that holds them properly. Prices include VAT. Schools can order on invoice.

Your Version
Every bench we make is designed around the person it’s for. We’ll ask what they loved, what places meant something to them, what words capture them best — and then our carver will sketch a design that pulls those things together. Lead time is typically 4–5 weeks. Schools and community groups can order on invoice. Get in touch to begin.
Finish
This piece is supplied unvarnished as standard. Left natural, solid oak slowly weathers to a soft, silvery-grey — completely normal for outdoor timber, a graceful way for a piece to age, and with no maintenance needed. If you’d prefer to bring out the grain and warm, honeyed tones, choose the varnished option (+£50) and we’ll hand-apply three coats of Epifanes, a premium marine yacht varnish.
More about the two finishes
Outdoor furniture takes a real beating from sun and weather. Left natural, an unvarnished piece simply silvers over time and asks nothing of you. A varnished piece keeps its rich sheen for a couple of years; after that the varnish may begin to flake or patch, at which point you can simply re-coat it, or let it weather back to that natural silvery-grey. Either way, your oak is fine.
