When Randwick Primary School commissioned this bench, the brief was clear and quietly beautiful: "like the owl reading bench, but with skylarks — big enough for four children." Isabel and Brian Stanley had given so much to the school community. What the school wanted was a place where children could sit with that memory, surrounded by birds that fly high and keep going.
The backrest carries skylarks rising through open sky, carved in solid oak. The inscription reads: "In memory of our dear friends Isabel and Brian Stanley, who gave so much to the Randwick Primary School community, October 2020." Below it, two words that say everything else that needed saying: Fly high. Heart-carved armrests, clouds and sky, birds in flight — the whole bench feels like it’s reaching upward.
Schools and community groups often come to us when they want to mark the contribution of someone who shaped their community. A teacher, a governor, a volunteer, a pair of people who just kept turning up and caring. This is the kind of bench that holds that — not a plaque on a wall, but a place to sit, to breathe, to remember properly. Prices include VAT. Schools can order on invoice — once ordered, it’s confirmed.

Your Version
Whether you’re commissioning for a school, a church, a community garden, or a family, we’ll design something around the people being remembered. Share the names, the story, the things they loved — and we’ll carve it into something lasting. Lead time is typically 4–5 weeks. Get in touch to begin.
Finish
This piece is supplied unvarnished as standard. Left natural, solid oak slowly weathers to a soft, silvery-grey — completely normal for outdoor timber, a graceful way for a piece to age, and with no maintenance needed. If you’d prefer to bring out the grain and warm, honeyed tones, choose the varnished option (+£50) and we’ll hand-apply three coats of Epifanes, a premium marine yacht varnish.
More about the two finishes
Outdoor furniture takes a real beating from sun and weather. Left natural, an unvarnished piece simply silvers over time and asks nothing of you. A varnished piece keeps its rich sheen for a couple of years; after that the varnish may begin to flake or patch, at which point you can simply re-coat it, or let it weather back to that natural silvery-grey. Either way, your oak is fine.
