Eight people around a table made of Welsh slate and solid oak — that is a very good way to spend an evening. The top is a single slab of reclaimed slate, polished flat and oiled with a traditional linseed mix that keeps it stain-resistant and easy to wipe clean. The legs are solid locally sourced oak, joined with mortise and tenon joinery and wooden dowels, and the whole thing is heavy, stable, and built to stay where you put it.
Slate is a material that doesn’t age — it just accumulates character. Cool to the touch, naturally matt, indifferent to heat and moisture in a way that wood never quite manages. The combination of slate and oak has an honesty to it that suits a kitchen, a dining room, a garden dining area under a pergola, or anywhere that benefits from materials that were around long before synthetic surfaces were invented.
