Every now and then a brief lands that tells you everything about a person in just a few symbols. This was one of those.
Michael came to us wanting a memorial bench for his mum, built around the things that summed her up. The result is carved into a single sweep of solid oak: beneath the words For My Mum, a serene Buddha sits among leaves and hearts, with three little birds taking flight across the backrest.
If those birds feel familiar, they should — there's a little Bob Marley in there, that gentle promise that every little thing is gonna be alright. Along the bottom rail we carved Love, Laughter, Loyalty, Strength and Forever in my heart. We finished the oak in a warm smoked tone to give all that carving real depth, and built the frame chunky and square, just as Michael asked — a solid, grounded seat that feels like it has always been there.
We love briefs like this, because they remind us what these benches are really for. Not decoration — memory. We work from your words and your symbols, carving each detail by hand here in Wales so the finished piece feels like one person and no one else.
