A wheelchair accessible composting toilet built to statutory disabled access dimensions, delivered and installed by our own team — the flagship of our range, and the waterless, off-grid way to welcome every visitor to a site without mains drainage.
We have been making composting toilets in Wales for 25 years, and more than 500 of our toilet buildings are now in use across the UK. Of everything we build, the Disabled Access Composting Toilet is the one we are asked for most. The enquiries come from campsites and glamping sites adding accessible pitches, holiday parks, nature reserves, visitor centres and National Trust or heritage properties, councils, schools and forest schools, churches, community gardens and allotment associations — all places where a proper accessible toilet is needed but a sewer connection is impossible or prohibitively expensive.
Our approach is function first, but form matters a great deal: the more beautiful the toilet, the more people accept it. So this is a handsome timber building, not a plastic cabin. Inside, there is a wide doorway, a wheelchair-friendly ramp, grab rails positioned for practical use and enough space for a wheelchair user and a carer. The same urine separation system we fit in every building keeps it free of smell — guaranteed — and it is as easy to use as a normal loo. We use quality, oversized timbers and take no shortcuts, which is why we are not the cheapest. We stand by the quality.
Our accessible composting toilets are already at work in a churchyard woodland garden in London, on a forest restoration site in the Scottish Borders, at an independent school nursery in Perthshire and at charity-run outdoor sites. Councils and planning officers regularly ask us for drawings, and we can supply elevation drawings and a scale plan for your planning application or funding bid.
Who It's For
- Campsites, glamping sites and holiday parks — an accessible, off-grid toilet for accessible pitches and shared facilities.
- Nature reserves, visitor centres, National Trust and heritage sites — waterless and chemical-free, so it suits sensitive and protected sites.
- Councils, parks and public open spaces — a permanent accessible toilet where mains drainage is not available.
- Schools, nurseries and forest schools — easy for children to use and a living lesson in sustainability.
- Churches, community gardens, allotments and care farms — so volunteers and visitors can use a toilet without going into the main building.

Key Features
- Wheelchair accessible design — built to statutory dimensions with a wide doorway, wheelchair-friendly ramp and spacious interior to accommodate a wheelchair user and carer.
- Grab rails throughout — installed and positioned for practical use, not just to meet a minimum requirement.
- Genuinely odour-free — the urine separator keeps liquid and solid waste apart, eliminating smell and producing a usable liquid fertiliser.
- No water or electricity needed — a fully off-grid, waterless accessible toilet. No mains connection and no drainage infrastructure required.
- Delivered and installed — this is not a flat-pack. Our team brings it to your site and installs it. You get a working toilet, not a set of instructions.
- Built to last — quality timber, treated base materials and weatherproof construction for long-term outdoor use.

- Roof — corrugated steel and clear GRP plastic

All timbers are oversized for additional strength and longevity.
Elevation drawings and a scale plan are available on request for planning applications, grant bids and groundworks quotes. The wheelie bins are reached from outside via a counter ramp, so if the toilet is going onto turf we will ask whether you can dig down around 30 cm for it — we will talk this through with you when we quote.
Grant Funding
Many of our disabled access composting toilet customers have applied for grant funding to cover the cost. Relevant sources include the National Lottery Community Fund, Groundwork UK grants, the Rural England Prosperity Fund, Historic England (for church and heritage sites), Countryside Stewardship capital grants for farms hosting educational access, and local authority accessibility grants. We are happy to provide a formal quotation, drawings and supporting information for your application — get in touch to discuss.

Free Range Designs
St Paul's Woodland Garden, London
We needed a compostable loo that was fully accessible. Our garden project is in a churchyard amongst old protected trees so the company we went with needed to be sensitive to this. We also wanted to work with a company who produced their own work from their own designs here in the UK and had strong green credentials. Paul and Suzanne from FRD were excellent from the start. They listened to our requirements, gave us a swift and detailed quote that played out exactly in the final cost. They are flexible, creative thinkers and are always up for working round any problems that might arise. Our loo is a major talking point and fits really well with our values around sustainability and light touch intervention in the garden. Particularly helpful right now during the pandemic as our volunteers and service users return to the project as they can use the bathroom without having to go into the main church building.
