Every now and then a commission comes along that stretches what we thought was possible. This was one of them.
A customer came to us with a vision for a complete bedroom — a fantastical hand-carved bed at its heart, and a pair of bedside cabinets to sit either side, each one carrying its own carved character. The bed will get its own moment in the spotlight when the time comes. For now, we wanted to share the cabinets, because they deserve it.
The first has a witch's hat carved into the door — a wonderful swirling shape with a feather quill, flowing and full of movement. The second carries a serene Buddha, seated in meditation on a lotus flower, rendered in quiet detail in the grain of the oak. Two very different personalities, but they sit together beautifully.
Both cabinets are made from solid oak. Each one has a generous open shelf at the top — just right for a lamp, a book, or whatever finds its way to your bedside — and a hinged cupboard below for the things you'd rather keep out of sight. The rounded post legs and softly shaped shelves give them a warm, organic feel that makes them feel like they've grown rather than been built.
The carving itself is all done by hand. We don't use CNC machines or routers for this kind of work — it's chisels, gouges, and a lot of patience. The oak grain becomes part of the design, which is one of the things we love most about working in this wood. No two pieces ever look quite the same.
