Not Just for Castles: A Viking Throne for the Kitchen Table

Hand-carved oak Viking throne at a farmhouse kitchen table in Cornwall, owner with a cup of tea

Most of our Viking thrones end up in grand places — castle grounds, visitor attractions, school libraries and storytelling circles. This one went somewhere we didn't expect: Eric Sleeman's farmhouse kitchen in Cornwall, where it now sits at the head of the table for the morning cup of tea.

A Viking throne, made his own

Eric had been following our work for a while before he got in touch about our Viking Norse Throne. Over a phone call with Suzanne we made it his:

  • a solid central seat
  • a rounded front edge, so legs drop comfortably over it
  • an overall height of 170cm
  • the family name, SLEEMAN, carved into the backrest
  • the date it was made carved on the underside of the seat — you'd have to turn the chair over to find it

It's solid oak throughout. Four carved dragon heads rise from the top, twisted posts frame a central panel with a Norse compass symbol and interlaced knotwork, and a band of runes runs around the panel. More knotwork runs along the front rail.

Here it is outside the workshop before it left — from the dragon heads down to the full throne:

From the workshop to the kitchen table

The throne left our Mid Wales workshop at the end of September. When it arrived, Eric wrote to say he was "absolutely delighted" — and sent photos of it in its new home.

Viking furniture for everyday living

A carved throne doesn't have to live in a great hall. Solid oak is made to be used every day, and a Viking chair at the kitchen table, by the fire or in a study gets sat in far more than anything kept for best.

The same goes for the bedroom. We make Viking beds and bed frames in solid oak — carved headboards, knotwork, dragon heads or runes, built around your mattress size, from single to super king. The Wooden Flame Bed and the Rustic Yew Oak Bed are good starting points for a Viking bedroom, and we're happy to carve a Viking bed headboard to match a throne like Eric's.

Make it yours

Every piece of our Viking furniture is made to order in Wales. We send a drawing for approval, take a 50% deposit and build in around 4–8 weeks. Names, runes, dates and size changes are all part of it. Get in touch with your idea — a throne, a chair or a Viking bed.
